Engineered hardwood

Engineered hardwood flooring is an excellent alternative to the standard solid wood flooring option. While still considered to be a hardwood floor, engineered wood is made out of multiple layers of genuine hardwood coupled with multiple layers of plywood or MDF core planks running in various directions. Due to this particular structure of the engineered floors, they have the look and feel of solid hardwood flooring, but with better resistance to temperature and moisture changes. The structure of the plywood planking underneath, allows the boards to expand and contract without effecting the solid hardwood layer on top thus alleviating some of the stress of cupping and gapping during humidity and seasonal changes, as well as being more resilient to moisture. Most engineered hardwoods are protected by an extremely durable, UV cured urethane coating, making them stand up to scuffs, scratches and general wear and tear better than a regular oil or water-based polyurethane.

Another benefit to engineered flooring is that they come pre-finished, so they result in a quicker installation time frame, very little actual down time on the floors and homeowners are able to avoid the mess that comes with sanding and finishing site-finished solid hardwoods. They can also be installed in a variety of different ways: nailed down, glued down, or floated in order to fit your home’s specific subfloor structure and needs.
